The programme follows a blended internship model that provides undergraduate and postgraduate students with in-work experience and a potential talent pathway into a career within NHS Wales. Through the programme you will receive mentorship, training and organisational safaris through different departments of the organisation.

The programme will stimulate your curiosity and innovation enabling you to influence and champion change.

You will be carrying out research using a range of different sources, analysing them to identify key themes/issues, producing reports and making recommendations. You will need to use initiative and be proactive, with determination to deliver improvements and results. As an intern, you will be guided and supported to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to complete your regional/national project, that will contribute to ensuring an ever more efficient, quality-driven and professional health care service.

The HEIW Summer Internship Programme has been designed by students, for students. Here’s how it all started.

Interns from Cardiff University joined HEIW in Easter 2021 to develop the first ever HEIW Summer Internship. During 2 weeks, they attended organisational safaris and took development workshops in Compassionate Leadership; quality improvement and human factors; equality, diversity and inclusion and completed the IQT Bronze.

They have designed and planned what an NHS Wales Internship would look like. Watch their final presentation:

We are looking for students with a desire to make a difference and experience working within NHS Wales with the prospect of embarking on a career in NHS Wales. You will be curious, creative and innovative and have the ability to listen, engage and communicate effectively with others. You will be working alongside inspirational and dynamic leaders, as well as a mentor and a buddy.

The year-long Internship Programme is an opportunity to extend on from the Summer Internship, where the successful interns will have the chance to develop further national/regional projects in different areas of HEIW, ensuring valuable work experience, and witnessing first-hand the day-to-day challenges of the NHS.

The year-long internship is a great way of getting hands on experience, building great networking opportunities, increasing motivation and confidence.

Interns are expected to attend the HEIW office in Nantgarw, Cardiff, throughout the 8 weeks.
